Barbara Gross. Women Artists as Protagonists
The gallery owner Barbara Gross has always thought beyond trends and put the museum's appreciation of the artists before her own commercial success. She worked as a publisher of art editions from 1981 and as a gallery owner in her own premises in Munich from 1988 for almost 40 years for more equal rights for women in the art market.
As an art mediator, she was involved in exhibition projects outside her gallery, in panel discussions, in her own magazine articles or with CONTINUUM, the association she co-founded to promote women's art. Artists such as Ida Applebroog, Maria Lassnig, Nancy Spero or VALIE EXPORT, Katharina Sieverding and Michaela Melián initially determined her programme, which she later continuously expanded, also to include artists such as Leon Golub, Rémy Zaugg or Boris Mikhailov. Her joy in discovering international and young positions from China, India, Cuba or Venezuela and in expanding the art-historical canon was palpable until the gallery's closure in 2020 – and remains so today.
The ZADIK exhibition illuminated the period from the beginnings of Barbara Gross' multifaceted mediation work to the end of the 1990s. The gallery's programme was presented on the basis of selected projects and the decades-long collaboration with Nancy Spero, who is representative of the other artists.
The exhibition was accompanied by a digital guide containing further information for visitors, which could have been accessed via the Freshmuseum app on your smartphone before, during and after your visit to the exhibition.
