Reflections on the Art Market - Writing Art Market History | A Special Issue of sediment for the 30th Anniversary of ZADIK

ZADIK | Zentralarchiv für deutsche und internationale Kunstmarktforschung (Central Archive for German and International Art Market Research) would like to invite interested researchers to submit essays for the anniversary issue of the journal sediment in 2022, addressing the theme “Reflections on the Art Market - Writing Art Market History,” for its peer-reviewed section “Research.”

The journal sediment – Materialien und Forschungen zur Geschichte des Kunstmarkts / Resources for and Studies in the History of the Art Market, which was established in 1994, is published annually by ZADIK. To date, its contents have been researched and authored based on subject matter selected from its own archival holdings. The ongoing conceptual development of sediment as a two-part journal, with essays published in both German and English, in a print version as well as an open access online one, is being continued for a special issue in 2022, on the occasion of ZADIK’s 30th anniversary.
The themes under consideration, which change with each issue, will continue to focus on the ZADIK archives in its “Documentation” section. At the same time, the parameters are being expanded to include external perspectives and approaches from the interdisciplinary fields of art market research, archival studies, economic and cultural history, as well as art history and related disciplines. Starting with the 2022 issue, a “Research” section is being introduced, comprising essays by external authors who have been subjected to a double-blind peer review process.

Essays from various disciplines, in either German or English, will be welcomed for the “Research” section of the 2022 anniversary issue, which is being dedicated to the following themes and issues:
– Analysis of the processes involved in canonization as it relates to the history of the art market
– How is the history of the art market written?
– What are the demands/approaches, challenges, and perspectives involved in this field of research?
– What role do interdisciplinary approaches play and what are the possibilities that they open up for art market research? (Case studies will be welcomed)
– What are the institutions and collections that are addressing or encompass art market history?

Timetable and Submission of Abstracts for the Peer Reviewed “Research” Section:
– Please submit a one-page abstract (max. 2,500 characters including spaces), 5 keywords, and a brief CV in a PDF to Claudia E. Friedrich by December 15, 2021 (claudia.friedrich@uni-koeln.de).
– The decision concerning which abstracts to accept for the peer review process will be made by January 15, 2022.
– The fully developed essays are to be submitted by April 15, 2022.
– The objective is to publish the selected essays in the anniversary issue of sediment in September 2022.
